International STEM Innovation Challenge 2027
A 3-day hackathon bringing together 200+ students from 15 international schools across Southeast Asia to tackle real-world sustainability challenges using cutting-edge technology.

A Three-Day Journey of Innovation
The International STEM Innovation Challenge returns to VGS for its third edition, bigger and more ambitious than ever. Over three intensive days, teams of 4-5 students will design, prototype, and present solutions to pressing sustainability challenges facing Southeast Asian cities.
This year's theme, "Smart Cities, Sustainable Futures," challenges participants to leverage artificial intelligence, IoT sensors, renewable energy systems, and data analytics to create practical solutions for urban sustainability. Teams will receive mentorship from industry professionals, access to cutting-edge prototyping equipment, and guidance from faculty advisors.
Challenge Tracks
Track 1: Clean Energy — Design innovative solutions for renewable energy generation or energy efficiency in tropical urban environments. Past winners have developed solar-powered water purification systems and AI-optimized building cooling algorithms.
Track 2: Waste Revolution — Create technology-driven approaches to waste reduction, recycling, or circular economy principles. Think smart sorting systems, composting automation, or waste-to-resource conversion.

Track 3: Green Mobility — Reimagine urban transportation with solutions that reduce emissions, improve accessibility, and enhance quality of life. From bike-sharing optimization to traffic flow AI, the possibilities are vast.
Prizes and Opportunities
The grand prize winner will receive $5,000 USD in project development funding, mentorship from MIT Media Lab researchers, and the opportunity to present at the Asia Pacific Innovation Summit in Singapore. Additionally, all participants receive certificates recognized by the International Science Olympiad Foundation.
How to Register
Registration is open to students aged 14-18 from any international school in the Asia Pacific region. Teams must register by March 30, 2027. Individual students can also register and will be matched into diverse, cross-school teams — a feature that past participants have praised as one of the most valuable aspects of the experience.
